When the Foundation for Food and Farm Connections reached a pivotal moment in its growth, the team recognized the need to step back, clarify its mission, and align its strategy across stakeholders, programming, and funding.
After navigating donor-specific projects and operating with a small team and startup-level resources, the organization sought outside perspective to help bring the full picture into focus.
Through a focused period of strategic advisory and collaborative planning, the team strengthened its mission clarity, refined its messaging, and aligned internal goals with external opportunities.
With Silver Maple Strategies serving as a steady, encouraging thought partner, the organization was able to reset its foundation, articulate its impact more effectively, and unlock new funding including a successful Farm to School grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Before working with Nate/Silver Maple Strategies, what primary challenge(s) or transition(s) were you facing?
LUELLA: We needed an outside perspective and expertise in nonprofit strategic plans, fundraising, grant support, and prioritizing needs with a small staff and startup budget.

What made you decide to bring Nate/Silver Maple Strategies in at that specific moment?
LUELLA: We valued Nate's wealth of knowledge and understanding of the nonprofit sector. We also felt like we were at a pivotal moment of program mission and identity, after working through several donor-specific project components. We wanted to step back and embrace the full picture, considering stakeholders, end-user, objectives, education and outreach.
Can you point to any specific, measurable outcomes, wins, or signs of progress that resulted from our work, even if they are non-financial (e.g., team morale, new product launched, time saved, risks mitigated)?
LUELLA: We used tools to create internal program messaging, mission, goalposts, metrics, etc., to help us fuel grant applications (which we were awarded a USDA Farm to School grant). This has allowed us to reset the stage and articulate program impact much more effectively.
What changed for you or your organization as a result of this partnership?
LUELLA: The encouragement and outside voice are so important. A reminder that our work is worthy and challenges faced are common among nonprofits and other organizations makes all the difference. We formed clarity in our mission and purpose, pulling back and taking time to identify our main goals, and map out program objectives, talking things through. It sounds simplistic, but it’s so needed, especially for teams who get in the grind day to day.
On a scale where 1 = No change and 5 = Significant improvement, how would you rate the increase in your:
-
Organizational clarity and strategic confidence? 5
-
Leadership and team confidence? 5
-
Improvement in decision-making stabilization? 5
What did Nate actually help you do, build, clarify, or move forward?
LUELLA: Nate's ongoing support helped us identify program goals, and articulate program messaging to appeal to various audiences and stakeholders. Nate helped us reflect on impact we have had, and create practical goals moving forward. Nate also helped us bring all of our resources, past work, former application narratives etc. together for fundraising and grant opportunities.

What was different about Nate's approach compared with other consultants, agencies, or options you considered?

LUELLA: Nate brought so much knowledge and sincere understanding of startups, and nonprofits of all sizes, that I felt we were able to jump right into program development and strategic planning in initial meetings.
Nate is very organized and has processes in place that allowed us to share all the finite details and big picture goals, so he could have a solid understanding of past, current, and future program challenges and goals. These exercises also helped us tremendously to think through mission, goals, internal processes, etc. in a new way.
Nate's sincere spirit and positive outlook is encouraging and such a lifeline to nonprofit management.
Were there any moments where Nate’s flexibility, calm demeanor, or judgment stood out, especially when handling complexity or unexpected situations?
LUELLA: Nate reminded us that not all partners meet our needs and goals, and with additional partners and sponsors come additional responsibilities. The reminders around small staff, the grind of nonprofit fundraising, and passionate team members can cause burnout. Good partners elevate.
Regarding the support provided, how valuable was the integration of human-centered expertise with practical artificial intelligence/technology insights?

LUELLA: Extremely valuable; it was a key differentiator.
Who would be the best fit for working with Nate?
LUELLA: I truly believe Nate can bring meaningful value to a wide range of organizations and industries. Those with roots in faith—or who are openly guided by it—may find even greater benefit as they lean into those principles when navigating challenges. Organizations that designate a clear point person to communicate regularly with Nate, and who invest time in working through processes and obstacles alongside him will, I think, ultimately gain the most from the experience.
If someone asked whether working with Nate was worth the investment, what would you say?

LUELLA: Nate is personable, sincere, and deeply caring. He doesn’t hesitate to roll up his sleeves and immerse himself in an organization’s challenges and successes, allowing him to thoughtfully advise and support passionate teams as they navigate the complexities of nonprofit work.
I’m so grateful for Nate's kind and caring spirit. His demeanor, paired with knowledge and experience, provides a positive working environment. He is always quick to respond, help, jump on a call, and listen. What a rarity in today's culture!
