A 90-day, human-centered storytelling journey for families and organizations that don’t want precious stories to disappear.

If you’re like many adult children or leaders of successful organizations, you’ve caught yourself thinking:

  • “We should really write these stories down someday.”

  • “I don’t want to forget this.”

  • “I wish I had more time — or the right way — to do this well.”

Perennial Pen exists for families and organizations that want something deeper than questionnaires, email prompts, or AI-generated memories.

This is a face-to-face, human storytelling experience (in person or via private video call) designed to feel meaningful, joyful, and unhurried.

Behind the scenes, I handle the logistics so you can focus on what matters most: honoring lives and organizations that have meant so much to those around them.

A Real Human Conversation — Not a DIY Product

This is not AI slop, therapy, or homework.

It's a guided, deeply intentional storytelling experience led by a professional interviewer.

Perennial Pen is slower, thoughtful, and personal.

Your loved one (or leaders, partners, and clients, in the case of organizations) gets space to reflect, and you get peace of mind knowing these stories will be preserved with care.

What This 90-Day Journey Looks Like for Families and Organizations

  • Days 1-60

    • Step 1: Short pre-survey and recording permission. You retain full ownership of all final products and stories.

    • Step 2: Kickoff conversation via Zoom.

    • Step 3: Four weekly storytelling sessions (1 hour each), or one half-day intensive (4 hours).

    • Step 4: Story capture and preservation. All sessions are professionally recorded and transcribed. You’ll share up to 15–20 high-resolution family photos to weave into the storybook.

  • Days 61-90

    • Step 5: The Perennial Pen team will take all of the interview materials and turn it into a compelling book draft.

    • Step 6: We'll send you a PDF copy of the book for review and revisions prior to printing.

    • Step 7: We'll make the requested changes, get the book printed and shipped to you, and provide all of the supporting materials (e.g. transcripts). (Note: We will share the file with you so you can print additional copies if you like at your expense. We receive a small commission on each extra book printed.)

    • Step 8: You'll call all of your family and friends (or staff, partners, and loyal fans in the case of organizations) over for dinner so you can gather around the book - you'll laugh, tell stories, and share warm memories. It's the most beautiful part of the process, and it's yours to keep!

Is This the Right Fit?

This is a great fit if:

  • You want your loved one (or your organization's representatives) to feel honored and at ease

  • You value conversation over extraction

  • You care more about meaning than volume

  • You’re ready to focus on the most important stories first

This might not be a fit if:

  • You’re looking for a full autobiography capturing every life detail (we do offer a separate author program if you are interested in researching and writing a longer book, such as a memoir)

  • You want a fast, transactional, DIY-style product

  • Your family is navigating trauma or tension that would make storytelling unsafe right now

Meet Your Interviewer

I’m Nate Birt, a University of Missouri-trained journalist, author, and interviewer with more than 20 years of experience capturing meaningful life stories. Much of my work has involved writing stories at the end of life, often after it’s too late to ask one more question.

I built Perennial Pen to change that, one family at a time.
